Mid-tier financial services (FS) firms are cool. These are banks and capital markets firms that meet the local and regional needs of their clients with a goldilocks mix of just the right community connections and customer experience. However, many of these firms are struggling to compete against large national competitors that are driving digital innovation at scale and smaller innovation-forward fintech challengers. They are stuck in the middle, lacking the budgets of the big guys, innovation appetite, and expertise of the fintech challengers.

At the same time, mid-tiers have something the others lack—community-based customer connections—they know their customers, often literally. As digital engagement and AI-driven everything pervade most facets of modern life, mid-tier FS firms must invest in enough modernization to drive meaningful personalization as a digital extension of their local and regional brands.

HFS Research, in partnership with Cognizant, set out to better understand the unique needs of US mid-tier FS firms. We surveyed 151 leaders from these firms to identify their priorities, related investments, challenges, and what’s really delivering value. The data shows a clear appetite for growth, distinct plans for modernization, and innovation-led initiatives, but with high cost sensitivity and an acute awareness that technology and services firms are not prioritizing solutions for mid-tiers. They need more than trickle-down digital.

Join HFS for this unique Digital Roundtable event in partnership with Cognizant to discuss the study findings, including:

  • Managing cost, revenue, and profit in the post-Silicon Valley Bank world
  • What mid-tier banks and capital markets firms are investing in to move the needle
  • The biggest roadblocks to progress and what we can do about them
  • Is GenAI all that and then some?
  • How to get beyond trickle-down digital to services and solutions truly built for the unique needs of mid-tier banks and capital markets firms
